History
The study of physics at the University of Tuebingen evolved from the study of astronomy. Astronomy has been taught at the University since 1507. Johannes Kepler received his Master's Degree from the University in 1591.The first full professor of physics was installed in 1851. The first School of Mathematics and The Sciences in Germany was founded in Tuebingen in 1863. The modern Faculty of Physics was formed in 1970.
Teaching Staff and Students
The Faculty consists of thirty-one professors, eleven lecturers, and about one hundred research scientists.
About 1,200 students are studying in the Faculty. About one hundred twenty graduate students are engaged in doctoral studies.
Curricula
Two curricula are offered. One leads to the Physik-Diplom degree, generally equivalent to a Master's Degree. The other leads to the Physics Education degree, which qualifies the student to teach physics in secondary schools.
The Faculty offers the Ph.D. in Physics. About one hundred-twenty graduate students are currently pursuing Ph.D. studies in Physics.
Research Facilities
The Faculty cooperates closely with research institutions at the national and international levels. The Faculty's accelerator for low-energy nuclear physics, and its facilities for electron holography, low-temperature research, and computing, are made available to visiting researchers and scientists.
Each department maintains extensive mechanical and electronics facilities for the construction of experimental equipment. A central clean-room facility is under construction. The clean-room will contain laboratories for the fabrication and characterization of unique materials and structures.
The Faculty maintains a central library of journals and monographs. The University Library also contains excellent resources for study and research.
